Cold Feet - A Speculation

Fri Mar 6, 2009, 3:58 AM
So I was just thinking these past few days...
What if we could sever the link between our mind and body? When I say this, I mean, that obviously certain things control and cause the release of hormones, chemicals and endorphins in our brain. The release of these substances, thereafter, affect the way our body feels.
So.
What if we could control what chemicals our brain releases.
I suggested this to someone, and was met with the reply of: "We can... That's what drugs do."
But I'm not convinced. I know drugs are mind-altering substances, which, in effect, is EXACTLY what I'm talking about (altering/controlling the mind)... But drugs are also harmful to the body.
Is there not a way of creating something to control our emotions, without damaging us?
For example.

You have a terrible day at work. You get home and find out your dog's dead. You're feeling horrible. But there is a way of controlling how you feel...
So you pop a pill or something and suddenly your brain is releasing happy endorphins, and you're not so sad anymore. Not so angry anymore.
But then, another question.
After the effects of these chemicals wear off... What will happen then? Will it be the same type of thing as binge-drinking? Drinking to solve your problems?
Will the sad feeling come back afterwards?
Will it be worse? Who knows?
It's just speculation. I doubt it will ever happen... and this is why:

Human emotion CAN NOT be controlled. It can be suppressed, stifled, ignored, overlooked, unseen or disregarded. But it can't be controlled.
Isn't that the beauty of life though? To know that everyday will be a surprise, be it a terrible surprise or a good surprise?
Do we really WANT to control our emotions? Are emotions not one of the very things that separate us from computers?
Emotions can mess one up. They are a major source of grief in the world.
But they can also be fantastic, great, awesome things.
Next time you're angry or sad or happy or excited... Here's something to do, and I promise you it's the best thing ever when one is met with a high level of emotion.

Play drums.

Fuck it.
